SPECIAL AIR SERVICE

Special Air Service

The Special Air Service (SAS) is the principal special forces organisation of the British Army. Formed in 1941 to conduct raids behind German lines in North Africa, with the Long Range Desert Group, it today serves as a model for similar units fielded by many other countries.

The SAS is a small and secretive organisation, but attracts a disproportionate amount of media coverage. It forms part of the United Kingdom Special Forces, alongside the Special Boat Service (SBS) and the Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR).

The SAS is widely regarded as one of the finest and best trained special forces units in the world.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the SAS were involved in operations in Afghanistan. Operation Trent employed half the Regiment in a successful attack on an $85,000,000 opium storage plant in Helmand province, which doubled as an Al-Qaeda local command centre.
Roman Abramovich's luxury yacht Ecstasea (launched in 2004) is rumoured to have an ex-SAS crew.

On 30 January 2005, an RAF Hercules crashed near Baghdad, killing ten British servicemen. The plane had just dropped off fifty members of G Squadron north of Baghdad for an operation to combat the increased insurgency.

On 22 July 2005, the SAS were reported by The Sunday Times to have aided in intelligence gathering and surveillance for the Metropolitan Police which resulted in the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, although the use of SAS forces was later denied by Sir Ian Blair, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. Following on from the 21 July attacks in London, on 29 July 2005 the SAS assisted in an operation to capture some of the terrorists who are believed to have carried out the attempted attacks. The SAS were seen arriving in unmarked vehicles and wore balaclavas throughout the operation to conceal their identities. The SAS helped with storming the flats in West London and are believed to have fired several shots in the process.

On 19 September 2005, two supposed SAS members were arrested in the city of Basra in Iraq. Iraqi police claimed the two were arrested trying to plant bombs dressed in civilian clothing and had shot at police officers. The arrests sparked clashes in which British armoured personnel carriers came under attack from petrol bombs. Later, official Iraqi sources said that British tanks knocked down a wall storming the city's jail and rescuing the soldiers. The British Ministry of Defence initially said that the men's release was negotiated and the tanks were merely trying to collect them. They later, however, claimed that the police had illegally handed the men over to Shi'a militia and it was from these that they had to be rescued.

The Vickers K was designed as an air-to-air weapon fitted to British aircraft. Firing a mixture of .303 armour-piercing, tracer and incendiary rounds, the Vickers K was ideal for shooting up parked enemy planes, something the SAS did to great effect during the War. Grenzschutzgruppe 9 (GSG-9)

Formed: 1973
Headquarters: Hangelar, Germany
GSG-9 was formed as a direct result of the inept response of German police to actions of Black September terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Following the end of World War Two, German authorities had been apprehensive about creating an elite military unit for any purpose. This, in addition to the desire to demonstrate to the world that Germany was no longer the fearsome entity it once was, caused planners to establish security that was as low-profile as possible. As a result, the terrorists were able to penetrate the Olympic compound, murder two athletes and take nine others hostage. The incident took an even worse turn when the on scene commander ordered his men to fire on the terrorists who were preparing to board two helicopters to effect their escape. Poor marksmanship, coupled with a number of snipers who refused to fire, led to the least desirable outcome - an open gun battle. When the smoke cleared on the Furstenfeldbruck military airfield, the nine remaining hostages and terrorists were dead. After this, the Germans vowed they would not be taken by surprise again and authorized the creation of a counterterrorist unit which was deemed operational in April 1973 - only six months after the incident at Munich. The only stipulation was that GSG-9 would be manned and controlled not by the military, but by the Federal Border Police Force (Bundesgrenzschutz) instead. One benefit that membership in the Federal Border Police provides to German government CT efforts is that these highly skilled operators can also conduct long-term infiltration of terrorist groups, which increases the potential for foiling any illegal act before it happens, rather than simply reacting after the fact.

The GSG 9 der Bundespolizei, formerly known as Grenzschutzgruppe 9 ( Border Guards), is the counter-terrorist unit of the German Federal Police. It is considered to be one the best unit in the world. It served as a model for the creation of other counter-terrorist units around the world.

In 1972, the Palestinian terrorist movement Black September kidnapped eleven Israeli athletes during the Summer Olympic Games in Munich. They killed two athletesin the Olympic Village in the initial assault on the athletes' rooms.

The incident tragically culminated when German police, that wasn't trained or equipped for counter-terrorism operations, attempted to rescue the athletes. They failed miserably, and the operation led to the deaths of one policeman, five of the eight kidnappers and the remaining nine hostages (subsequently called the Munich massacre ).

As a consequence of this massacre, German officials created the GSG 9 units so that similar situations in the future could be responded to adequately and professionally. The unit was officially established on April 17 , 1973 as a part of Germany's federal-level police agency, the Bundesgrenzschutz (federal border guard service). This branch was renamed in 2005 to Bundespolizei ( federal police). The name GSG 9 stood for "Grenzschutzgruppe 9" (border guardsgroup 9) and was chosen simply because there existed eight regular border guard groups at the time, although after the 2005 renaming the expansion was dropped and the abbreviation "GSG 9" is now the single official way to refer to the unit. Its formation was based on the expertise of the British SAS (who also offered great support in the forming of GSG 9) and the Israeli Sayeret Matkal .

Other GSG9 activities include :

  • The Arrest of Red Army Faction (1983 and 1993)
  • The ending of the hijacking of a KLM flight from Tunis to Amsterdam (1993)
  • The liberation of four German tourists held hostage in Egypt (2001)
  • The arrests of terrorists linked to the September 11, 2001 attacks (2001, 2002)
  • The protection of German embassy personnel in Baghdad, Iraq (2004). Two GSG9 operatives were killed during this operation.
  • The arrest of 3 terrorists with links to al Qaeda, suspected of preparing a massive bomb attack on US facilities in Germany (2007).

Sekilas DENSUS 88

Secret Service. Kebanyakan staf pengajarnya adalah bekas anggota pasukan khusus AS.

Selengkapnya...

1th SURVIVOR...

Anggota kopasus yang pangkatnya udah tergolong elite (mungkin major keatas kali ya..) diberikan sebuah latihan yang sangat khusus. Saudara temen gwa ini (mulai sekarang sebut saja Mr.X), tergabung kedalam pelatihan khusus ini. Seperti apa pelatihannya? baca terus...

Selengkapnya...

Batalyon Intai Amfibi / YONTAIFIB (Amphibious Reconnaissance Batallion)

Yontaifib is an elite unit in the Marine Corps, just like Kopassus in the Army. This unit is used to be named Kipam (Komando Intai Para Amfibi - Amphibious Reconnaissance Special Forces Command).
To obtain a certification of amphibious reconnaissance, a regular Marine has to first pass a tough selection and then pass the nine-month rigorous training program that contains the most difficlut curriculum. Thus, this amphibious recon certificate is very similar to commando certificate in Kopassus.
To become a Yontaifib troop, a candidate is selected from the Marine Corps who has already fulfilled the thorough mental and physical requirements, and who at least has actively served the corps for two years. The certification of amphibious reconnaissance is so difficult that the passing rate of these candidates in each class is only ten percent.
One of the most challenging exercise in this certification program is to swim underwater for three kilometers with the hands and feet are all tied. Because they are tied, the swimmer has to mimic the way dolphins swim. This swimming style is a training for anticipation of being caught by the enemies and trying to escape by swimming in the river or sea. The escape experience by U.S. Navy Seal members in the Vietnam War is the basis for this training. Selengkapnya...
